Video: The PSP Go Stripped Naked

The iFixit crew always makes it interesting… Completely disassembled from the outer to the innards with a video slide show wrapped around: Sony’s PSPgo. You may want to keep this bookmarked should the GO get hacked by way of modchip or some other low-level means.

Hum along to this…

All you need is a Phillips #0 Screwdriver. A spudger and some iPod opening tools may come in handy as well; see the source.

K-Lite Codec Pack.

Original Name: K-Lite Codec Pack.
Webpage: http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm
Latest Version: 5.1.2 (update from 5.1.0)
Available for MAC?: No.
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.

K-Lite Codec Pack is a tool that i had to talk about. You know, when you have made a fresh installation of Windows, or even when you just got a new DVD or a ripped one from a friend and you want to watch it, it's usual to see that message: "Codec not found", and luckily you hear the sound but no image; or the player just crashes. (Yeah, even with VLC) It's then when you just break your head looking for a solution that isn't that easy to find.

Well, that was until codec packs like this one, K-Lite, appeared. It installs selected codecs that have been tested to work, some interesting tools and some filters for better visualization. At the moment, is the best option for getting the latest needed codecs for watching that stuff that you haven't been able to last night. Being like that, each user might need a different thing. Therefore, you have different packages;

- Basic Package - Main codecs that you will need for a regular installation and for some defined view (AVI, MKV, MP4, FLV, OGM, MPEG, MOV, HDMOV, TS, M2TS, and OGG files.): Download.

- Standard Package - Basic Package + your needs for DVD playback and FLAC files. Also, it includes the Media Player Classic, in case of extreme need :P Download.

- Full Package - Standard Package + DirectShow filters and some loss-less audio filters and some other audio codecs. Download.

- Mega Package - Full Package + other few codecs and Real Alternative, your chance to play .rmvb files without that odd Real Player (not freeware). Download. This is probably the best package you can choose.

There are also a couple more of packages, Corporate and for 64 bits; but the first one is like the Full one intended for Corporate enviroments... nothing strange to tell about it. Even though, you can check better all the differences between them here.

Anyway, this is a must-have in those cases of need, even though VLC (that i will talk about on this section sometime later) has many built-in codecs and might be your first choice. In case of doubt, install all what you might need, and forget about playback problems.

250GB PS3 Slim bundles, UK price, release date

Eurogamer is reporting that there will indeed be a 250GB PS3 Slim model, and that it will be arriving in Europe as early as October. Allegedly, it is a part of the three console-plus-game bundles.

For the UK, it's looking like the game bundles will carry either Assassin's Creed II, Gran Turismo 5 or Uncharted 2. Bundles will be pegged at UK£ 299.99 (US$ 436.42). If this be the case, then it would appear that only Uncharted 2 will make it to the October bundle launch. Assassin's Creed II won't be out till November 20th, while Gran Turismo 5 still has an unknown release date, although it has been said to be out by Q4 of 2009.

Tagging this as rumor, guys. Till there's official word from Sony or any of the concerned parties, this ain't gospel truth.

PSP FW 6.00 now out! *UPDATE* Official changelog

Originally posted: 09Sept 09, 9:49PM

Heads up, guys! Firmware 6.00 for the PSP has now been released by Sony. You can now download it via the Network Update. No word yet on what the changes are, but we'll be sure to keep you updated on this as we dig up more info.

For quicker navigation, just click on the source link below.

Thanks to tipsters 300zxtt0 and EXTER!

*UPDATE*

Eric Lempel took to the PlayStation Blog to announce that the firmware update v6.00 "will be available soon." Looks like he didn't hear of it having been released already earlier.

Nonetheless, he gives us an exact list of the changelog, and so we find that it is a minor update - just as he said. From the looks of it, the items that were correct from the leaked changelog would be the added new theme colors under the Theme Settings, and the renaming of the Network Update to System Update. As for the other goods, they're not listed here by Lempel.

* For those of you looking to customize your XMB (XrossMediaBar), a few new colors will be added under the Theme Settings. These new theme colors can be used on PSP models 2000 or after (PSP-2000, 3000 and N1000).
* A security patch has been added.
* [Network Update] has been renamed as [System Update].

ImgBurn

Original Name: ImgBurn
Webpage: http://www.imgburn.com/
Latest Version: 2.5.0.0
Available for MAC?: No.
Available for GNU/Linux?: No. But it runs without any problem under Wine. (Tested)

Here it comes once again. ImgBurn is the best FreeWare Disc Burner out there. It supports CD, DVD, DVD-DL, and even HD-DVD & BR, so it's the only tool that you should need for burning your discs and for many other uses, instead of having tons of other tools.

ImgBurn Main Menu

Once loaded, you can see that image in where you can select the mode and the use you want to do. The main uses are as follows:

- "Write image file to disc". One of the most used, i bet. A single click, then selecting your .img/.dvd/etc source, and burn it directly to your DVD/DL/etc.

- "Create image file from disc". The opposite option from the first one, it allows you, from a desired media, to create an .iso file. Disc ripping is it.

- "Verify Disc". Simple disc verification against an image file, or just for media errors.

- "Write files/folders to disc". As usual, backup making of your music/videos/etc.

- "Create image file from files/folders". The previous step of burning an image. This creates an .iso image from the files you want to.

- "Discovery". This is quite an interesting option. It allows you to check the quality of your burning device so you can know the final quality of what you are producing.

Once that you have finished any job, you can directly get a Graph Data in where you have the main data explained so you can check if everything has gone ok.

Now let's see the cool things. It autodetects if your media will be a music/xvid/etc, and auto-adjusts the settings for it; if you are making a backup from a .dvd file and you don't select it; it autoselects it if found; it attachs a log in where it explains every process that is being made; creates .cue/.dvd/.mds files if needed with the Tools option; allows you to define special drives/devices and set the speed you want to use; ...

Oh, and almost forgot! It randomly adds a funny quote at the bottom of the main window at start, lol. An example: "Oh, I feel so deliciously white trash. Mummy, I want a mullet!" bwahahah.

Anyway, you can download it here.

Have fun with it! It hasn't give me any problems since i first used it. And till now.

7-Zip

Original Name: 7-zip
Webpage: http://www.7-zip.org/
Latest Version: 4.65
Latest Beta Version: 9.07b
Available for MAC?: Yes. p7zip, EZ 7z.
Available for GNU/Linux?: Yes. p7zip.

7-zip is the best file archiver, and the one with the highest compression ratio that works flawlessly and allows you to open almost any compressed file.

Again, this is open-source software, (under GNU License) and as we've just said, it uses a great compression ratio within LZMA compression, being more stable and more efficient than other compressors. Even though packing&unpacking is only available for 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR; you can use 7-zip for almost all of your uses. However, i've not been able to use it with Al-zip packages, at least yet.

One of the features that I like most is the speed that it uncompresses your files, far better than Winrar or similars. Also, that built-in AES-256 encryption for *7z and zip formats it's one of the most used.

Being open-source, you can check the SDK and of course you can download the source code, and you can even check for support on their forums.

Download: Here.
Beta Versions: Here.
Download version for Windows Mobile: Here.

To be honest, this is my best compressor since I first saw it. Even though i've been using WinRAR, WinZip, and even KGB, this has proven to be the fastest and with better compression that i've seen. Give it a try, it won't disappoint you ;-)

PS3 beats Xbox 360 and Wii by three to one, sales up 999 percent

The PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii by a ratio of three to one in the latest ChartTrack sales figures. The 999 percent sales increase follows the launch of the new slimmer PS3 SKU in the UK last tuesday.

While ChartTrack wasn't able to release the actual sales figures, it has confirmed that the console has outsold the Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii and the DS Lite by three units to one:

The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36. The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week – PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one

The longevity of this uplift very much depends on the time of year. The PS2 Slim was released in November, much closer to Christmas. We’ll have to wait and see how things work out for Sony this time.

Seems like a pretty good week for Sony. The redesigned PS3 was launched in the UK on September 1 for £ 249.99.

Notepad++

Original Name: Notepad++
Webpage: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/
Latest Version: 5.4.5
Available for MAC?: No.
Available for GNU/Linux?: Under Wine. Check here.

Notepad++ is one of those best text editors out there. It's open-source (as well as everything we like to share and use), and having that in mind, it happens like always, it has a cool community behind that makes plugins, translations and many other stuff that are available for the original binaries.

However, it's designed just for Windows, but it will run without any problem under Wine for GNU/Linux, and probably also for Mac, but i've not personally tested. Based on Scintilla and written in C++, it allows you to write your code and/or edit whatever text file you want, without any problem.

Because it's mainly for that, programming-oriented with colored sintaxis, with zoom, a great searching&replace feature, multi-document view (so you can check for duplicates), and you can even use macros with it.

But of course, having in mind that community, you can find tons, tons of translations of it so you can use Notepad++ on your own language. Pretty funny to find even Català language between them. Also, there is a tool that's pretty interesting, if you want to replace the actual Windows notepad with this Notepad++, following some easy guide.

Anyway, one of the things that I like most of Notepad++ is the Wiki community, with great additions that you can use directly on your binaries, and between them we have CCompletion, the one that uses the Exuberant Ctags that we were explaining yesterday (On Notepad++, it's just Ctrl+Space and you will get the completion). I encourage you to check all the other plugins, and you'll see how cool can this be.

But well, this is it, and by far is my best text editor at the moment. Want to download it and give it a shot?
- Download: Here. (MD5)
- Sources: Here.

This reminds me of a conversation i had some months ago, with an old-school programmer that, when i told him about this program, he just said: "Real programmers don't need highlighting. I've been programming on a Paper or under Vi for ages". But well, even though he's right on his argument, it's cool anyway :-P

PSP firmware 6.0 coming this week?

Earlier last week, we reported about Sony releasing a brand new firmware for developers. Don't look now, it seems the same firmware is heading to our PSP's real soon. How soon?

While answering some fan question regarding the Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do To Deserve This? Demo, Allison Walter of NIS America said that expect firmware 6.0 to be released on or before September 10:

Hi Killzone_Kid! This is what has been decided for the Badman demo: we're going to re-release it next Thursday, 10 Sept, by which time Firmware 6.0 should have been released. Sorry for the wait!

If the post is true, then we can expect a new firmware update sometime this week. Stay tuned.

PSP CFW 5.50 Gen-B – Custom Firmware

PSP Custom Firmware 5.50 Gen-b PSP CFW 5.50 Gen-B Well guys, It seem PSPGen and the team have release yes another update to the PSP Custom Firmware 5.50 Gen version, Now it upto PSP CFW 5.50 Gen-B now. Below is a translation of the readme file included on their read me file. Please make sure to follow all instruction when using PSP Custom Firmware . Make sure to follow all instruction carefully to avoid any issue such as bad updates or a brick PSP .

Our new Custom Firmware 5.50GEN-b is now available and it is with happiness that we will enjoy doing

It must be recognized that if our first version was running perfectly, we did not realize how much you were attached to the “plus” offered by our Custom Firmwares in general (option pandorisation, VSH in recovery, according to the extinction of console, etc. …). It is true that all these little treats are still very practical and we have remedied this by adding in the 5.50GEN-b.

The little “bonus”

Our Custom Firmware 5.50GEN-B can play the game Evangelion: Jo without having to patch the ISO of the game This little bonus is unfortunately still unstable because the protection of Bender / Sony is very well done and deserves a hat off. However, if you want to try it, you must start the game on appyer start when the game requests quickly and enchainer top + round will start the game. Not too trainer in this sequence because the protection is lifted for a few seconds. Note that protection is responsive regularly and if you return to the menu you will be asked to leave the game If it is possible to play, it will be impossible to sna sdoute from a backup. Note that this bonus is a POC (proof of concept) plus a real feature. We will do an article on how the game is protected and why it is difficult to counter.

News of 5.50GEN-B are:

* The bug that prevented disabling the VSH Menu has been resolved.
* The select button can either start the Recovery (Recovery in VSH), the VSH Menu (default) or do nothing at all (for those who use the remote play between PSP and PS3)
* Updated network off M33
* Jo Evangelion The game can be launched.
* Pandorisation options are available in the VSH menu and Recovery
* Option Flash1 Format: adding a check that prevents the Flash1 format if it is in the VSH.
* 3 new functions in the VSH Menu
o Shutdown device (turn off)
o Make Normal Battery (Replace the battery in standard mode)
o Make Pandora Battery (pandodrise battery)

s4ve.as, huge (and unlimited) file sharing

I've just seen this service called s4ve.as, in where you can "upload any file of any size for free and get back a link to that file good for 24 hours", shortened with bit.ly service. That way, you will get any size file upload with 24hours available for sharing.

Quite interesting, and even more having in mind that "behind s4ve.as there are former Napster, Sony and Ericsson executives". Lol. But cool, anyway.

Nintendo makes Wii Internet Channel for free, forever

Good news, Wii fans! Nintendo has made the Wii Internet Channel available for free from now on! Yep, no more of that 500 Wii Points requirement (US$ 5). Free. Free. Free.

But what about those who already did shell out the five bucks? Not to worry, cos starting the end of October, Nintendo will be giving away one NES game of their choice from the Virtual Channel, of the same value as the 500 Wii Points downloaded for the Internet Channel. Plus! There's also an upgrade in the form of Adobe Flash Lite 3.1, perfect for all your YouTube needs.

PS3's 3D mode coming next year, Sony planning full-scale 3D tech rollout

Remember the PS3 3D demo Sony showed off at CES earlier this year? Well 3D talk is back again, and this time there's now a date for when PS3 owners can experience it.

According to a report from Engadget, a PS3 firmware update to be released sometime next year will let gamers experience "all" existing PS3 games in 3D. Of course, you'll have to shell out a few bucks for the 3D glasses and a new TV, but it sure does feel very exciting.

Here's a vid of WipEout HD running in 3D, although without the glasses all we can really see are double-vision images -- basically what the game would look like after a few bottles of beer.

The tech apparently goes like this: The PS3 itself sends a regular HDMI signal to the TV, which in turn will sync with the 3D glasses. Says Engadget, "A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye."

The Financial Times also explains that the glasses themselves will have "tiny shutters that open and close rapidly in synch with the television image to create a 3D impression." Sony's calling this the "active shutter" technology.

Earlier this week, Sony CEO Howard Stringer also unveiled plans for a massive rollout of the 3D tech spanning the Bravia TV line, Vaio laptops, Blu-ray players, and of course the PS3. All of this will also happen next year.

Thanks to Train04 for the tip!

SCEE: PS3 lifecycle to last longer than PS2's

The PS2 has been around for almost ten years now, but it's still going as strong as can be expected from a last generation console. It has sold more than any other console to date, both home and handheld, but SCEE boss Andrew House believes that the PS3 will eventually trump it in terms of lifecycle.

"If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can't predict where that lifecycle will end," House told Edge in an interview in the magazine's latest issue.

"I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience - and let's not forget that the PS2 really didn't offer a tremendously robust network experience - that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that lifecycle more and more as you get to the next iteration," he added.

With less than three years under its belt, the PS3 is still in its infancy, so it remains to be seen if House's theory comes to pass. Some industry insiders have predicted a new console generation to kick off in 2012, but keep in mind that even if that does come true the lifecycles of this generation's consoles can still continue even further, just like the PS2's.

'Spiderman' fined for scaling Petronas Towers

French climber Alain Robert, known as "Spiderman" for his death-defying antics, was fined by a Malaysian court on Wednesday for scaling the nation's tallest building.

Robert scrambled up the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers with his bare hands in less than two hours on Tuesday, finally reaching its peak after two unsuccessful attempts over the past decade.

"Climbing is my passion, climbing is my life," the daredevil said outside court when asked why he had scaled the towers, which were for a time the world's tallest buildings.

Robert was held in custody overnight before being brought to court where he pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and was fined 2,000 ringgit (567 dollars), but escaped a possible six-month jail sentence.

He was led into court wearing an olive-green jacket, jeans and leather boots, unshaven and with red eyes.

"Everybody has been very nice," he said of his one-day incarceration.

His lawyer, Wong Kian Kheong, told the court that Robert was "a passionate climber" who had not caused any damage to property.

"He has not done the climb for profit or publicity, I have never met any other person who is so passionate about climbing," he said, adding Robert had promised not to tackle any other Kuala Lumpur buildings in the future.

Robert celebrated his ascent Tuesday by standing with his arms outspread on the pinnacle of one of the towers, which are home to the state energy firm Petronas as well as many international companies.

He first tried to scale the building on March 20, 1997, and made a second unsuccessful attempt in 2007 after which he was freed without charge. Both times he reached the 60th storey before being intercepted by authorities.

Robert has been nicknamed "Spiderman" for his high-profile escapades, which have included climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The 452-metre (1,483-feet) Petronas Twin Towers, which opened in 1998, were for several years the world's tallest buildings until being upstaged by Taipei 101 in the Taiwanese capital among others.

Koller: No go for piracy on PSP Go

In case it wasn't painfully obvious, the new PSP Go is Sony's next move in their ongoing battle against piracy on their gaming handheld. From firmware updates to the non-removable battery, it seems Sony has really done the research.

Speaking to PlayStation Insider, Sony's John Koller conceded that earlier PSP models -- from the 1000 to the supposedly unhackable (we all know how that turned out) 3000 -- weren't piracy-proof, but the Go will be a different beast altogether.

"You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that," he said. "There's no external [PSP Go] battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."

Curbing piracy on the handheld is all well and good (and should result in more games), but the non-removable battery could still act as a deterrent for some. If that thing wears down, users who bring their handhelds wherever they go have no choice but to send their devices to Sony and get it replaced, unlike the current status quo where all you have to do is pop on down to the store and buy a new one.

PSP-4000 in Development; And the UMD is Back?!

Just as I tossed all my UMDs in a pile and lit ‘em on fire I stumble across site after site reporting the PSP-4000 is in development, and not only that, it will feature the UMD drive again. This all stems from one anonymous fellow who calls him/herself Super_Secret. But — the real kicker — Super_Secret was bang-fuckin-on when it came to those PS3 Slim rumours and other PS3-related business. So yeah, this could very well be true; I don’t doubt it.

Let me quote:

Who said the 3000 wasn’t being phased out? It will be and sooner than you realise. However, the PSP Go isn’t what’s replacing it. The 4000 is. And yes, it will have a UMD drive. And similar to the PS3 “slim”, it’s nothing to actually get excited about.

Your thoughts?

Video: The PSP Go unboxed

Those GamesRadar folks sure are lucky. We already saw them unbox a PS3 Slim, and now they've laid their hands on another piece of Sony hardware: the PSP Go. Watch them get play around with it a bit in the vid below. I'll say one thing, though: the difference in screen size doesn't seem that big after all. The price, however, is another story.

Sony will be rolling out the PSP Go in North America and Europe on October 1. In a bizarre twist, Japan will only get it a month later on November 1.
